==Early Life and Career== Fauchard was born in Brittany and joined the French Royal Navy at age 15. It was there that he encountered the scurvy-related oral diseases common among sailors. Under the mentorship of Alexander Poteleret, a surgeon-major, Fauchard began documenting his observations of the [[oral cavity]] and the effects of malnutrition on the [[periodontium]]. By the early 18th century, he established a practice in Paris, where he broke the tradition of "trade secrets" by openly sharing his surgical techniques and instrument designs with colleagues.
