Definition

[edit]

Dentistry is the health care profession devoted to maintaining the health of the teeth, gums, and other tissues in and around the mouth. It is an integral part of general health, as oral diseases are often linked to systemic conditions such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

History

[edit]
  • Ancient Origins: Evidence of tooth drilling for medicinal purposes dates back over 9,000 years.
  • The Father of Modern Dentistry: Pierre Fauchard (1678–1761) revolutionized the field by introducing dental fillings as a treatment for caries.
  • Modern Era: The 20th and 21st centuries saw the introduction of Fluoride, High-speed handpieces, and Digital Dentistry.

Dental Anatomy

[edit]

Understanding the structures of the oral cavity is fundamental to the practice:

  • Enamel: The hardest substance in the human body, protecting the crown.
  • Dentin: The layer beneath enamel that makes up the bulk of the tooth.
  • Pulp: The central part of the tooth containing nerves and blood vessels.
  • Periodontium: The specialized tissues that surround and support the teeth (gingiva, alveolar bone, periodontal ligament).

Specialized Branches

[edit]

While general dentists handle routine care, complex cases are referred to specialists:

Future of Dentistry

[edit]

The field is currently transitioning toward:

  • Regenerative Dentistry: Using stem cells to regrow tooth structures.
  • Artificial Intelligence: Automated diagnostic tools for X-ray and 3D scan analysis.
  • Minimal Intervention Dentistry: Focus on preserving as much natural tooth structure as possible.
